It wasn't easy for me to conceive. Before undergoing hormone treatments and laparoscopy, I decided to try acupuncture, homeopathy, as well as continue with my yoga classes. I was so blessed when I conceived so soon after starting acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture not only helped me conceive but also helped me through my difficult pregnancy. I had concerns with bleeding in the first trimester, short cervix and possibility of premature labour. For 7 months I was on bed rest. I also experienced lower back pain during my pregnancy.
I was preparing myself for non medicated labour by using acupuncture. I delivered 10 days after my term a healthy boy and had an active, natural labour without episiotomy even though my son was over 4 kg (9lbs).
Now pregnant with my second child - with my history of short cervix and terrible backache - I am so blessed I found Dr. Mary Wong. I am fully confident in going through my pregnancy with her help, experience, and expertise. Dr. Wong is the most compassionate, concerned and caring doctor that I've encountered. This is something you need the most when you are trying to conceive, achieve a full term pregnancy, and get through postpartum. It is also important for my mind and spirit to know that I am doing everything possible to have a family, a healthy pregnancy, and a child without medication, hormones, or surgery.

My journey to conceive has had its ups and downs. At times it feels isolating. I have turned to TCM and acupuncture in the past, but my most positive experiences have been at Alive. With David there is definitely a "we" in the process. He provides an holistic approach with sound and sensitive advice. His gentle acupuncture techniques are soothing in times of stress. I have always been open to Chinese Medicine and exploring non-Western health alternatives. I had some experience with acupuncture in the past, but was unaware of it's uses in fertility and women's health. Working with Tanya was an eye-opening experience.
I learned an incredible amount and gained a much deeper understanding of my body and its working in my time with Tanya. She immediately made me feel at ease and like we were embarking on this journey together - I felt her investment (of time, energy and care) was as great as mine. I was comfortable asking any and all questions, as well as discussing anything I was feeling either directly or indirectly relating to the treatment.
After just 2 months of treatment with acupuncture and herbal treatment, my cycles were shorter, about 30 days.

I had a positive pregnancy test after just 3 months working together, but was a bit cautiously optimistic as I had miscarried just a few months before.
Tanya was very good in being sure to discuss my progress, the specific treatment week to week, and in keeping our end goal clearly in sight and reassuringly achievable. I was very fortunate to have real changes and results happen (ie. shortening the length of my cycle) almost exactly as planned, making me recognize how we were moving forward.

I began seeing Mary during a period before my first IVF cycle. My husband and I had suffered through years of infertility, cycle monitoring, and repeated IUI attempts. In preparation for our first IVF cycle I began acupuncture and massage therapy. Despite recurrent losses in the past, I carried my twin sons to almost 37 weeks!! I was taking pills for arthritis, more pills for headaches and more again for a neurological disorder. Enough already! One acupuncture treatment later, and the headaches were a thing of the past. The discomfort from the arthritis is much better and very manageable. The Chinese herbs seem to help me with a feeling of general well being. I’m so pleased with the results thus far and plan to continue with both the acupuncture and the herbs.

I suffered throughout my teens and early twenties with extremely heavy (even hemorrhagic), extremely painful periods. As a teenager, doctors put me on the birth control pill which served only to dull the problems but not to treat them. When I decided after several years that I didn't want to be on hormonal birth control anymore, I went through a difficult readjustment period of withdrawal from the hormones that resulted in painful skin problems. My periods became increasingly heavy and painful. The only solution doctors could offer was more hormonal birth control and one nurse at my university health clinic told me, "we may be able to control the pain if you would be willing to take the pill but there's nothing anyone can do about the heavy bleeding.
At our first meeting, Tanya took the most thorough history any healthcare professional had ever taken and, using the framework of Chinese medicine, was able to make connections between health concerns that had always seemed unrelated. I was impressed with the integrated, holistic approach to the body as a complex organism rather than as a set of unrelated systems.
After almost 15 years of monthly struggle and believing that there was no real treatment available, Tanya's treatments with acupuncture and herbs made a change in my periods in the first month. And within 6 months of seeing her regularly, I had periods with normal flow that were almost entirely pain free. The change was dramatic. After about two years of seeing Tanya on and off, I had periods that were totally normal, even light in flow, without any clots and without any pain. Monthly bleeding had become a non-issue where once it dominated my life for several days of the month with pain and extraordinarily heavy bleeding. Hormonal birth control had not been able to address these problems over many years. It is not overstating the facts to say that Tanya's treatments changed my life.
I'm now pregnant and so I'm still seeing Tanya for support during my pregnancy. So I still look forward to her treatments. She has a wonderful, warm, professional manner. Appointments with Tanya never feel rushed. She always gives plenty of time to check in at the beginning of appointments. Even though I know she has other clients in treatment, I never feel that she is managing a busy schedule. She always seems present and available whether I need 5 or 20 minutes to talk things over with her when I arrive. It's a remarkable skill in a healthcare professional to run a busy clinic, keep appointments running on time, yet still never give patients the feeling of being rushed when it's their turn in the treatment room. I met Mary went I was at my darkest time. I was so depressed and negative and frustrated. From the western medicine side I was diagnosed with:
High FSH resulting in: Very few follicles per cycle, Follicles that would not divide into 8 or more cells, and was diagnosed as perimenopausal
Brown eggs resulting in a diagnosis that I will never get pregnant with own eggs
Chocolate Cysts resulting in cancelled cycles and abdominal pain.
Mary assured me that all of this was fixable. Mary put me on herbs and started on acupuncture. I felt incredible. I felt like I had control of my body again. I felt I was making a difference in how my mind and body would respond to treatment. I had hope. And each week Mary would confirm how much progress I was making. Mary felt I didn’t need IVF treatments and I could get pregnant with Chinese medicine alone but I was too scared and impatient to wait and see.
After months with Mary and A.L.I.V.E treatments we went to the doctor. The doctor did our first round of tests and my husband’s sperm was measured at 5 million that is 5 times what it was at first diagnosis. By our next cycle it was up to 9 million, and the quality and motility improved. The doctors were shocked.
As for me, I never had another cancelled cycle. I never had another chocolate cyst. My FSH was lower, but still borderline, and I was still not producing a lot of eggs but the ones I did produce were healthier. And most of all my eggs were no longer brown!!!
In the summer of 2007, my husband and I conceived our first child. Naturally! No IVF cycle. I am due May 24th of 2008. I credit acupuncture for this (and me and my husband of course). I have had a healthy pregnancy and feel incredibly lucky and grateful. I will continue with acupuncture as it is now part of my life.

I wanted to thank you again Tanya for your excellent work in helping to get labour going for me a couple of weeks ago (hard to believe it has already been that long!) Labour started spontaneously for me on the night of the 16th - a few hours after my last treatment.
Although I wasn`t able to give birth at home as we had planned – Alex was “sunny side up” as they say, making labour quite difficult. With a lot of back pain in the end I needed some assistance. However, it was a huge relief to have labour start naturally, since I could spend the majority of the time at home with our support team. Our doula thinks that if the labour had been induced at the hospital that I would have needed c-section because I wouldn`t have been able to move around enough to work the baby down.
